Linked sketches: Primary & Detail Sketches

The core concept behind Tech Pack Wizard is linked sketches.

Instead of duplicating artwork and manually keeping it in sync, TPW uses two sketch types that stay connected:

  • Primary Sketches (PS)
  • Detail Sketches (DS)

These work together to reduce errors and save time when designs change.

Primary Sketches (PS)

Primary Sketches are where you create and update your flat sketches.

  • Each Primary Sketch lives on its own artboard
  • Each artboard should contain one view only
    (front, back, side, etc.)
  • Primary Sketches are fully editable

Think of Primary Sketches as your source of truth.

Detail Sketches (DS)

Detail Sketches are linked copies of a Primary Sketch.

  • Each DS is connected to a specific PS
  • Detail Sketches are not directly editable
  • This is where you add:
    • Spec POMs
    • Callout lines and text

Because they are linked, Detail Sketches always reflect the latest design when your file is saved.

What happens when the design changes?

When you update a Primary Sketch:

  • All linked Detail Sketches update automatically after the Illustrator file is saved
  • You don’t need to redraw, re-copy, or manually sync changes
  • Your annotations stay aligned with the latest design

This eliminates one of the most common causes of tech pack errors: out-of-date sketches.
