Excel Footer Shows “Pg. 1 of 1” on Every Page

This article explains why the footer on each page of your exported Excel file shows “Pg. 1 of 1” and what it looks like when printed.

Why This Happens

Each sheet in the exported Excel file is its own page, so when viewed individually it correctly displays “Pg. 1 of 1.” This is how Excel handles footers per sheet and is not a bug with the export.

When You Print

When you print the entire workbook, Excel recalculates the page numbers across all sheets. The footer will update to reflect the correct page count — for example, “Pg. 2 of 7.”

To see the correct pagination before printing:

  1. In Excel, go to File > Print.
  2. Set the print option to Print Entire Workbook.
  3. Page numbers in the footer will reflect the full document correctly.
