Create Close-up Detail Sketch Views with the Zoom Tool

This guide explains how to use the Zoom Tool to create focused Detail Sketch views by cropping and scaling a selected area of a sketch with one click.

The Zoom Tool is used to prepare sketches for annotation, such as specs and callouts.

What the Zoom Tool Does

The Zoom Tool allows you to:

  • Select a specific area of a sketch using a marquee selection
  • Automatically crop or mask the selected area
  • Scale the selected area to fit the artboard

The result is a focused Detail Sketch view that highlights a specific area of the garment.

Where the Zoom Tool Is Used

The Zoom Tool is used only on Detail Sketches (DS).

  • Primary Sketches (PS) are kept as clean garment sketches.
  • Detail Sketches (DS) are used for annotations such as specs, and callouts.

The Zoom Tool modifies the active Detail Sketch to create a new focused view.

Step 1: Open the Zoom Tool

  1. Open the Tech Pack Wizard panel.

  2. Navigate to a Detail Sketch.

  3. Select the Zoom Tool.

Step 2: Create a Zoomed Detail Sketch View

  1. With the Zoom Tool selected, click and drag to draw a rectangular marquee around the area you want to zoom into.

  2. Release the mouse to apply the zoom.

The selected area is automatically cropped or masked and scaled to fit the artboard.

Step 3: Review and Annotate the Zoomed View

Once the zoomed view is created, you can:

  • Add Points of Measure (POMs) using the Spec Tool
  • Add Callouts for construction or material notes

Notes

  • The Zoom Tool creates a new focused view within the active Detail Sketch.
  • The original Primary Sketch remains unchanged.
  • Zoomed views are intended for annotation and documentation.
  • Always save the Illustrator file to ensure the updated view is reflected in the tech pack.
